Research finally properly underway

Well I have begun reading Suetonius's book The Lives of the Twelve Caesars, Volume 1: Julius Caesar and first thing I read was the preface and found this

"The plan adopted by Suetonius in his Lives of the Twelve Caesars, led him to be more diffuse on their personal conduct and habits than on public events. He writes Memoirs rather then history. He neither dwells on the civil wars which sealed the fall of the Republic, nor on the military expeditions which extended the frontiers of the empire; nor does he attempt to develop the causes of the great political changes which marked the period of which he treats."

This paragraph written about the methods of Suetonius I found very interesting, he writes about who the man Caesar was, not what the man Caesar did, I am looking forward to the comparison in the way both Suetonius and Plutarch write about the life of Caesar, the similarities and the differences, hopefully there will be many of both.

Some points I have made that I will be researching in more detail about the life of Caesar so far in reading the first 20 pages of Suetonius's book are:
- He lost his father when he was 16 years old
- The following year (17) was nominated to the office of high-priest of Jupiter
- First marriage was to Cornelia, daughter of Cinna.
- Had a baby with Cornelia, a Daughter name Julia
- After resisting efforts of the Dictator Cornelius Sulla, was forced to withdraw from Rome
- Served his first military Campaign in Asia

These are some of the points that I will be hoping to compare when reading Plutarch's book, I also plan on comparing method, style, detail and what both books imply about the man Caesar was. Reading early into Suetonius's book it appears so far as so present Caesar as an incredibly determined man who wants to prove to himself that he is great.

So far I believe to have a great deal of information to choose from and now its down to reading this book and then Plutarch's writing down as many points about Caesars life and the Methods of both Historians as possible.

  1. Good - do plenty of background work on Suetonius and Plutarch.
