Parenti = Painful, but it adds to the essay :D

I was going to be using Gibbon as a small example of a Gentlemen Historian in my Essay, as Parenti uses him as his Example and has a fair bit of evidence early in the book. As Gibbon is the perfect 18th Century 'Gentlemen' having money and education, and the time to write... However on closer research on Gibbon I have discovered that he does not see Caesar as Parenti's Gentlemen Historians should. Gibbon famously argued that the reigns of the so-called five good emporors, (Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius) was the period in which humanity was most content in all of history. Gibbon thus found human happiness in the Imperial system that Caesar influenced and not in the pre-Caesar Republic.

  1. I really enjoyed Parenti's talk. From what I have read he has interesting ideas about ancient history.

  2. Looks like you are using a lot of resources, this is good and it shows, and you have said, that it adds to the essay. I doubt you will fall into the trap of writing the story because your information will be so much. The 10% acceptable extended word limit may work to your advantage if you have no other option. Keep going! :)
